What is the refractory period and why it happens

The refractory period is of variable duration and consists of a period of time in which the man is unable to achieve any type of erection: this does not absolutely mean that the man is impotent but only that no stimulation is able to bring about the sexual arousal until the refractory period ends. In fact, after this time everything goes back to the way it was before! During the refractory period, man not only fails to achieve arousal, but stimulation of the penis, glans or scrotum can even be annoying and painful. The cause of the refractory period is the release of oxytocin and prolactin during orgasm. These hormones are regulated by the hypothalamus and cause important changes in the human body. Oxytocin causes lower testosterone levels, while prolactin temporarily blocks the release of dopamine. This causes a lowering of libido and therefore the inability to achieve an erection.

How long does the refractory period last?

The refractory period has a variable duration from individual to individual. Usually in young males of about twenty it is equal to 28 minutes, while for example a seventy-year-old male takes 20 hours. In general, an adult male needs just under an hour. However, not all men need a refractory period. Some, and they are rare cases, have a refractory period of only 10 seconds! For some men, therefore, especially if they cannot experience multiple orgasms in the same relationship, it becomes difficult if not impossible and after an ejaculation they need a long time to reach another orgasm. The refractory period increases not only with increasing age but also after the first orgasm. If a certain period of pause is needed between the first and second orgasm, between the second and third orgasm it will be considerably longer! However, some men claim to be as capable as some women of experiencing multiple orgasms: these are theories that are not based on reliable scientific studies but only on sexual experiences and unproven stories. The difference between man and man is given by the quantity of substances such as oxytocin and prolactin released by the brain, as well as the quantity of serotonin which varies from subject to subject. The truth is that every man is different and this is normal.

Do women also have a refractory period?

When we talk about the refractory period, we immediately think of men. In fact, almost all women do not have a refractory period and after one orgasm they are immediately ready to reach another. But this is not the case for everyone! Some women after orgasm feel a hypersensitivity of the clitoris which makes the idea of a new stimulation unpleasant even if in reality they would be able to reach a new orgasm. Feeling the desire for a break after sex is completely natural, it is a completely physiological stop! Sex is inextricably linked to desire: after an orgasm it is normal for men and women to feel satisfied and satisfied and therefore need a moment's pause before trying again desire and therefore wanting to have sex again!
