Renal colic: summer at risk
A sudden and excruciating pain in the side or in the lumbar area, which radiates to the groin, associated with muscle spasms. Renal colic accounts for about 5% of all causes of access to the emergency room, but fortunately the time it takes for the pain to go away can be very fast today, with the right drug treatment.
Diclofenac: pain away faster
A study recently published in the prestigious journal "The Lancet", conducted on 1,644 patients, shows that diclofenac is the most effective, rapid and safe therapeutic option for managing emergencies in patients suffering from renal colic.
This Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) in fact guarantees a significant reduction of pain in a shorter time, with fewer side effects and with a superior analgesic efficacy.
In the first 30 minutes following the administration of intramuscular diclofenac, the intensity of pain has already decreased by 50% in a large majority of patients, and in only 10% of cases it is necessary to resort to further treatment after one hour. Virtually zero (1%) the incidence of adverse effects to the use of the drug.
Precisely with a view to summer and holidays, the new formulations of diclofenac injectable under the skin thanks to the latest generation biotechnological molecules, and available in reduced dosages, are among other things particularly suitable for self-administration in emergency situations, such as those that could be example checking in foreign countries with inadequate health facilities. Of course, the "autonomous" use of a drug must always be carried out after consulting a doctor.

Diet and advice
Excessive urine concentration is the main risk factor for the formation of kidney stones, because in this situation the particles of mineral salts, especially calcium oxalate, tend to precipitate forming agglomerates which then turn into real stones and own, or small pebbles of variable size, which can even reach a few cm in diameter. If it is not possible to expel them with urination, it will be necessary to crush them with shock wave treatment called extracorporeal lithotripsy.
The only way to keep urinary concentration low is to drink a lot during the day (at least 2 liters of water), especially in hot weather and even before going to bed, to counteract the nocturnal peak in urine concentration.
Further prevention tips concern the intake of table salt, which should be limited, as well as carbonated drinks, preserved foods and those rich in proteins such as meat, aged cheeses and cured meats, as they contain uric acid and oxalate. On the other hand, foods rich in calcium seem unrelated to the formation of stones, which would actually decrease the risk by favoring the excretion of oxalic acid.
These dietary rules do not naturally have an immediate effect, but should be applied during the winter to prevent any problems during the summer.
