Contrary to other professionals in this area, the psychiatrist is a doctor. He is therefore the only one authorized to prescribe medicines. He obtained a medical degree, before specializing in psychiatry: he then passed 10 years of studies. Psychiatrists often complete their studies with training in psychoanalysis or psychotherapy. This allows them to accumulate stocks.
In which cases should you contact the psychiatrist?
The psychiatrist diagnoses and treats mental disorders. Nevertheless, if he treats serious illnesses such as schizophrenia, paranoia, autism and other manic-depressive psychos, this specialist also deals with more common mild disorders: depressions, anxiety attacks, phobias, insomnia ... Do not avoid consulting a psychiatrist with the sorry I'm not seriously ill.
What methods does he use
First, the psychiatrist receives the patient for a consultation that determines the nature of his ailments. He resorts to listening and body work and sometimes offers psychotherapy, depending on the training received. If necessary, he can also prescribe a drug treatment. To do this, the psychiatrist has an arsenal of medicines. There is talk of psychotropics: antidepressants in the case of depression, neuroleptics for schizophrenics, anxiolytics against anxiety ... In case of need, the psychiatrist can suggest or impose hospitalization.
Practical information
The rates for a session at the psychiatrist may vary depending on the experience gained and the "name". The difference between two specialists can be large, and the prices per session fluctuate between € 40 and € 140. The psychiatrist generally receives in private practice, hospital or a center specializing in the treatment of mental disorders.
