Fear of spiders and snakes

What is a phobia?

Phobia is one of the pathological forms of worry. It is the fear of an object or a situation. These fears are not justified, but irrational, and the reactions they cause are often disproportionate to their causes. While being aware of this, people prone to these phobias cannot control themselves, and they can even have panic attacks. To avoid the "anxiety, the subject will develop behaviors called" counterphobic ":

> Avoid the object or phobic situation.

> Try to reassure yourself with counterphobic people or objects, which allow you to face the phobic situation without anxiety in their presence.

> Take your fear head on, facing directly and freely the feared danger, with a reckless, defiant attitude (bungee-jumping if the person has a phobia of emptiness, for example).

Fear of insects

Animal phobia, or zoophobia, is one of the most common and affects most women. About 7% of the population suffers from this type of phobia.

All insects are scary, but especially spiders (arachnophobia) and snakes (ophidiophobia).

It is not the animal itself that causes fear, but rather one of its characteristics: the hairy body, the rapidity of movements, the sounds it emits ... It is the exaggeration of an existing risk (bites, stings, attacks ...) which gives rise to these irrational fears: at the very thought of it you get goosebumps!

How to fix it?

There are more or less handicapped phobias. Zoophobia is part of the simple phobias, which do not disturb the life of the people who suffer from it. Just avoid risky situations, so as not to have to deal with the situations or objects that generate the phobia. Often, the fear is caused by a lack of information: it is therefore recommended to make an effort to learn more about the object of the phobia and, why not, to go and observe it in its natural environment. Through cognitive-behavioral therapies and some relaxation and anxiety management techniques, you will learn to better manage your fears.
