DIY hair dye: how to choose the right one

The first thing to decide is if you are already dyed or if your hair is natural. In the first case, with any color you can only darken and never lighten your color. In the second case, that is, if you have never dyed and your hair is therefore natural, with a permanent color, you can lighten your natural color up to 2 tones and darken as much as you want. The next step when you decide to color your hair is the color you want. The colors are classified according to a precise tonal scale, used by professionals. It is organized into main shades, from the lightest to the darkest. Reflections are added to the shades. We distinguish warm reflections (gold, copper, mahogany and red) from cold reflections (ash and iridescent). To find out which shade to use, just consult the tables found on the color boxes. They simply tell you which colors suit your natural color best.

Hair dye: permanent or temporary?

A temporary dye goes away in 6-8 shampoo sessions, while a semi-permanent one lasts 6-8 weeks; neither of them allows to lighten the natural starting color, but they are perfect for those who are beginners in the world of coloring. In this case, Casting Crème Gloss, the tone-on-tone coloring range of L "Oréal Paris, is optimal. Without ammonia for a pleasant fragrance, this line of products gives an intense color, rich in reflections and with an extremely natural effect. The cream texture does not drip and is ideal for all women who need to cover their first white hair. It also avoids the regrowth effect, since the color gradually fades when washing the hair, lasting up to 28 shampoos. this, however, without sacrificing the softness of the hair. In fact, thanks to the new post-coloring conditioner enriched with natural ingredients, Casting Crème Gloss nourishes the hair while coloring it, for a silky soft effect.

Permanent coloring, on the other hand, allows you to lighten the starting color by up to 2 tones if natural and to cover 100% of white hair. As the name implies, the permanent color does not go away and the Excellence Crème range by L "Oréal Paris is one of the best in this sense. Thanks to a formula enriched in restructuring and strengthening active ingredients, with Excellence Crème the moment of coloring becomes also an opportunity to take care of your hair. This new type of treatment sees three phases, with the use of three different products:

  • Protective coloring cream: enriched with Pro-keratin and protective active ingredients, it protects the hair while coloring it, ensuring a long-lasting colored hair.
  • Gentle Ph Shampoo: gently cleanses the skin and hair, removing excess color. The hair will appear soft and bright, with a rich and natural color.
  • Light nourishing mask: enriched with Ceramide, it repairs and nourishes the hair without weighing it down.

The precautions to take when using a do-it-yourself hair dye

- Check that you are not allergic to certain components of the product. It is usually recommended to purchase the color early enough to perform the allergy alert test 48 hours before applying the color to the head.
- Avoid contact with eyes, it is not a shampoo. Before applying the color, any type of cream is not recommended to avoid skin sensitization.
- After applying the dye on the hair, if you notice stains on the skin before rinsing, rub it with a strand still soaked in dye, you will see that the stain will come off more easily. If this is not enough, rub it on the skin of the forehead and hands a lemon cut in half. This will allow you to remove the color that does not go away easily with soap.

Hair dye in pregnancy: can it be?

But is it possible to dye your hair during pregnancy? No alarmism: hair dye in pregnancy is allowed, but just avoid the more aggressive ones and those that penetrate too deeply. For this period - we are talking about only 9 months, after all - it would be better to fall back on fixing sprays, hair mascara or revitalizing vials, as they have a particular composition that remains on the surface of the hair without coming into contact with the skin and the root. They are certainly less effective than real colors and have a rather short duration, but they can be used more often, precisely because they are less invasive.

Remember, however, that if you choose hair dyes - and try to select the less aggressive ones - you must be careful not to use them too close to each other, preferably one a month and no more; moreover, do not keep it in place for too long: it must not remain in contact with the skin too much, it should not exceed half an hour, otherwise it would risk triggering allergies and redness, conditions which, during pregnancy, are even more likely for via the hormonal changes to which one is subjected.

In any case, whatever product you choose during pregnancy, before proceeding with the dye, do the "skin sensitivity test" to ascertain that you are not subject to allergies. It is sufficient to apply a small dose of dye on the skin, even only on the hands, and if within the next 48 hours, you are not subject to redness, itching or swelling, you can proceed without problems.

How do you make a hair dye correctly?

To begin, take an allergy alert test 48 hours in advance.
Prepare the color and then proceed immediately to the application.
If this is the first time you dye your hair, distribute the product evenly over the entire length of the hair, from roots to ends, then let it rest for the time specified on the package. If, on the other hand, you have already colored yourself and want to keep a color similar to the previous one, first apply the color on the hair regrowth and leave it on for a variable time between 15 and 20 minutes, then spread the color also on the lengths by completing the indicated shutter speed. on the packaging.

If, on the other hand, you are already colored and you want to change the color of your hair, you have two ways:

  • If you want to darken you can choose a tone-on-tone color (if you don't have a lot of white hair) or a permanent color (if you have a lot of white hair) of the shade you like. To get the perfect color you should gradually darken, that is, if you want to go from very light blond to dark brown, you have to darken each time a maximum of two tones, reaching the dark color you want after 3/4 months. If you don't do it because you don't have patience, you risk becoming dark but with a 'greenish' reflection that is really unpleasant to see. P.s. this advice also applies to the colors you do at the hairdresser
  • If you want to lighten your hair you must first use a bleach and then recolor with a tone-on-tone color (if you don't have white hair or are starting to have only a few) or perm if you have almost all white hair.

How to apply the hair dye

To make the color at home you can use different tools and implement some precautions:

  • Wear gloves: in each pack of a good color to make at home there is a pair of gloves and you must wear them to protect your hands. By doing so, you also avoid staining your nails, with the unpleasant risk of not being able to remove the color anymore! It is also good to put them at the time of rinsing.
  • Always use a towel: Although quality products are creamy and do not drip, it is always best to be careful when applying the coloring at home. First, wear something that is comfortable and that you are not afraid of getting dirty. Cover your shoulders with a towel and, to make it more comfortable, line the back of the chair with a plastic bag. By doing this, you can rest your head and relax for the entire time of the dye. Take the opportunity to take a regenerating break: call a friend, watch a TV series ... in short, dedicate yourself to yourself!
  • The bottle helps you in the application: pour the coloring cream and the cream detector into the bottle, shake to create the mixture and apply it directly on the hair. With the tip of the bottle you can divide the strands of hair at the base and squeeze the bottle the dye content will come out of the small spout allowing you to distribute the product with precision, without danger of getting dirty! A tip? With your hand, always wearing gloves, massage the color at the root to make sure it penetrates well into the hair. at home they adopt this system. The final result is excellent and the application is super easy.

Advice with respect to the phototype: the right hair dye color for you

If your complexion is light, with pink undertones, opt for a dark color with cold reflections, such as violins, you will get a contrast that will certainly not let you go unnoticed. For a decidedly less showy look, choose beige or honey highlights in light tone heights (from dark blond to very light blond).

If, on the other hand, your complexion is “Mediterranean”, that is medium-dark and olive, you can “light up” your look by choosing colors ranging from copper to red. Or you can enhance the color of your skin by illuminating it with slightly auburn light browns / browns. If you want a natural look, we recommend natural shades (from dark brown to dark blond), without reflections.

Things to avoid when applying a DIY hair dye

- The succession of bleaching, because these procedures (in the long run) ruin the hair.
- Be careful with henna-based dyes, use them only if you are sure of the color and the result.Henna dyes cannot be covered with classic dyes in case of mistake. Combining the two types of dye is highly discouraged.
- If this is the first time you color your hair, avoid choosing a color that is too aggressive or too dark, because it will take time to get used to the new look!
