Types of damaged hair and their causes

Damaged hair is immediately recognizable when compared with healthy hair: the latter, in fact, is characterized by an intact cuticle, adherent scales, shine and elasticity. A healthy hair is easy to comb and also its tips are always intact, just look at them. !

On the contrary, damaged hair will be visibly damaged, and in different ways, also based on the causes that caused them to become damaged.

Some damaged hair is rough to the touch, dull, difficult to comb and with absent cuticle scales. This type is generally linked to dryness and photo-oxidation, i.e. loss of color and luster.

Damaged hair, on the other hand, are those in which the protein structure itself is modified, consequently making the hair more sensitive to external aggressions. This type is often due to stress reasons, in which it is a psychological problem that causes physical decompensation.

Another of the most frequent causes of damaged hair is the use of the hairdryer: if used too frequently and too intensely, it leads to dehydration of the hair, which loses its balance, shrinks in the shaft and becomes electrified.

But among the most common types of damaged hair there is that of split ends. In these cases the tips of the hair are so dry that they break and the formation of a split that can stretch for several centimeters.

Remedies for damaged hair: what to do and what not!

To cause damaged hair are, in most cases, aggressive treatments that dehydrate it and damage the shaft. The first thing to do, then, if your hair is damaged, is to stop treatments of this kind. So stop with chemical dyes (both at home and at the hairdresser), bleaching (which causes dehydration of the hair and makes it really fragile and prone to breaking), straightening or curling treatments (straightening and permanent). Start enjoying your natural hair, at least until it is back in shape as before!

Damaged hair should be treated gently. Be careful when washing them: wet hair is more fragile than dry hair and you will have to try to rub and dry it carefully and without violence. Avoid rubbing them hard while shampooing, but focus on massaging the skin. Then pat them dry with a towel, but I recommend: don't squeeze them!

Shampoo should not be done more than twice a week if you don't want damaged hair, and this is because the scalp must have time to produce sebum, an oily substance that coats the hair and protects it. Washing them too often will not allow them to perform their function, exposing the hair to greater brittleness.
Our favorite shampoo is from Tigi and it's called Resurrection. Just wash your hair once to instantly feel more hydrated and soft. Buy it on Amazon!

The use of a conditioner is equally important: it guarantees hydration and softness to the hair. It should be applied very carefully especially on the ends, which dry out more easily, until they break or split. Be careful, however, not to use too much!

The hairdryer, as you will have understood, it would be better to avoid it totally, letting the hair dry naturally. If you really can't do without it, perhaps because it's cold, always try to adjust it to a temperature that is not too high: you will avoid the heat from damaging your hair.

The situation of damaged hair can only be worsened by the use of brushes with plastic bristles: they pull the hair and break it, causing serious damage. Then replace it with a wide-toothed comb and comb it without pulling or trying to untangle the knots. with strength: remember that "sweetness" is the key word! Always start from the bottom and then go upwards. If, on the other hand, you really don't want to give up the brush, choose the one with boar bristles: its natural fibers distribute the sebum and give shine to the entire length of the hair. Try it with a wooden brush and 100% natural and made in Italy bristles, for about 12 euros on Amazon.

Often damaged hair is caused by the hairstyles we do: a too tight elastic is enough to damage it! Not to mention the extensions, completely to be avoided. Try to leave them as "free" as possible.
