The best cargo bikes for transporting children
Cargo bike for the transport of children
For some time now the so-called cargo bikes have also been approved for the transport of children. In this case their load capacity can exceed the limit of 50 kilos of transportable mass that the Highway Code establishes for trailers (or so-called “trailers”). The load limit of a cargo is linked to the approval of that specific model, which must necessarily be equipped with a seat, soft backrest, belts and in general all the necessary devices for safe transport. The cargo bike can carry a maximum of two children and in any case no older than eight years.

There are no cargo bikes made exclusively for the transport of children, unlike bicycle trailers. They are vehicles adapted and approved with specific accessories. The accessories that transform the body into a child carrier are often available as optional items or are among the possible configurations of the cargo. There are three different types: the first, most common, is the one in which the child is seated inside the box, in front of the rider. In the second option, the seat is placed in the back, or in some cases, more rare, the box is placed in the front but in a more raised position.

Towing is usually one of the solutions adopted for the touring cycle, unlike the cargo bike which is basically used for short stretches and city journeys. The trailer is much more bulky than a cargo trailer, even if it is more modular, meaning it can be detached, in order to use the bike in its classic configuration. However, the combination bike + trailer sometimes occupies a space of about three meters which is the maximum size limit imposed by law. Using a cargo bike to transport children therefore becomes useful for city journeys generally of short distance, for sure to take children to school, or around small city errands. Cargo bikes are certainly heavier and more massive bikes than traditional ones. There is no lack of space on board: it can also be used to accommodate luggage, goods or to transport children.
How to ride a cargo bike
Moms, don't panic! A cargo bike for transporting children is easy to ride: first of all, just have a look! That is to become familiar with the dimensions and overall dimensions which are naturally different from a traditional bicycle. In this case, driving while carrying a child will be much easier than using a front seat, since the mass is generally positioned lower and better distributed along the two hubs. Cargo bike also means greater safety for our child, because it is more protected by the special compartment, with less ability to negatively affect our balance with its sometimes sudden movements.
