The morning after pill: function, cost and side effects

An emergency contraception

The morning-after pill is an emergency contraceptive method, which allows you to significantly (although not totally) decrease the risk of pregnancy after unsafe intercourse (breaking the condom, forgetting the pill ...). from a progestin (the levonorgestrel) which prevents the fertilized egg from implanting itself in the uterus. However, if the embryo has already been implanted in the uterus, the morning after pill does not affect the pregnancy.
The trade name under which this drug is distributed in Italy is NorLevo®.

In the meantime, here is some useful information on contraception in the video below!

How to use the morning after pill

The morning after pill should be taken as early as possible after unsafe intercourse, and no later than 72 hours. The longer you wait, the less effective the morning-after pill will be.
95% efficacy is counted if the morning after pill is taken within 24 hours of intercourse, 85% efficacy 24 to 48 hours after intercourse and 58% efficacy 48 to 72 hours later ( Three days).
Some positions held during sexual intercourse could favor fertilization, pay attention:

And then?
Wait for the menstrual flow to arrive: the date may change slightly, but if the delay is more than 5 days, it is better to take a pregnancy test and see your doctor.
The same is true if the flow does not seem normal to you: longer, less long, painful, more abundant than usual. If you are using the contraceptive pill, continue taking it with another contraceptive method (condom…) until the end of the cycle.

Not to be forgotten
The pill of the day is an emergency method, and as such it cannot (and must not) replace one of the many methods of regular contraception.
