Have you decided to change your look and want to transform your hair from smooth spaghetti into soft curls? We explain how to do it using the straightener. But first let's break down the preliminary actions to make your hair wavy.
Washing them is the first step: a nice massage with a delicate shampoo specific for your hair type will be perfect for refreshing hair and scalp. Don't forget to use conditioner to nourish ends and lengths especially if you have frizzy and dry hair. Rinse well and before drying use a volumizing mousse to avoid the flat effect. Do not leave your hair damp because with the strong heat of the straightener you could burn it.

Apply a heat protector

Before putting the straightener into action, spray a thermal protector over the entire hair that can safeguard the beauty of the hair avoiding damage from strong heat. The thermal protectors on the market are able to create a barrier and protect the fiber from the hair from the risk of burning or wrinkling. Distribute the product with the help of a comb. If you have a lot of hair, to make sure they are all well protected, divide into sections and spray each one with a little heat protector.

Here are our 3 favorite thermal protectors:

  • Revlon Uniq One - on Amazon for € 7.99
  • GHD thermal protector spray - on Amazon for € 16.30
  • Matrix thermal protector 200ml - on Amazon for € 9.94

Section the hair

At this point it is time to divide the hair into smaller strands which will then be passed individually inside the plate. Collect the hair behind the head and stop it with a clip. Begin to curl the strands behind the neck and on the sides of the head ; then, gradually, loosen a part of the collected hair and continue gradually. This rule is especially true for those who have thick hair and want an optimal and well-defined result: it is better to take a few more minutes to do it strand by strand rather than concentrating on the whole hair all together.

The best techniques for making curls

Alternate flicks and curls

  • Flick: start from the middle of the lock, wrap it in the plate, close it and turn it around in the plate by half a turn. Keeping the plate at an angle, continue this movement until the end of the lock. The faster you move the plate, the less the flick will be evident, if you stop for a few seconds, it will be very visible.
  • Curl: start from the roots without burning your skin. Wrap the strand in the straightener, close it and make a half turn continuing to the ends. The slower you move the plate, the tighter the curl will be. If you move it quickly, you will form waves.

Take a full turn
After closing the lock in the plate, make a complete 360 ° turn. Choose from time to time the direction in which to make the turn and be amazed at the always different result!

Rotate the plate alternating up and down
To make special curls with the plate you can rely on your imagination: rotate right to left, top or bottom will create always different effects. Try them all and choose your favorite.

Choose soft waves
If you're aiming for a retro wave effect on your hair rather than curls, alternate a quarter turn with the straightener back and forth. In this case you will need to work the entire length of the lock from root to tip. Waves done this way are perfect for recreating a 20s look.

How to make curls with the straightener: tips & tricks

If you have very straight hair that is difficult to curl, spray hairspray on the strands just before going through the straightener. This secret will make your curls last longer. Remember not to overdo the hairspray to not make your hair too stiff.

To better understand how to divide the strands and how much hair to take for each, adjust as follows:

  • Small locks make curls tighter and more defined. Do you want to have a permanent effect? The locks must not be wider than about 2 cm.
  • Thicker locks will turn into voluminous curls and look natural. Use strands wider than 2cm to achieve this look.
  • You don't necessarily have to keep a single measure. You can create tighter curls along with wide curls, nothing can stop your fantasy. Only by experimenting will you understand what is best for you.

Mix the techniques for making curls that we have described to you in the previous paragraphs. Experiment with the width of the strands and the speed of the straightener. It is not necessary to curl all your hair, if yours are already wavy, aim first of all on the smoothest locks that will blend with the other more natural ones.

Don't miss a final touch. For a super natural look run your fingers between the curls to make them less defined, or comb them to make them become light soft waves. In the end, to top it all off, spray a little hairspray or an anti-humidity product, especially useful on dull days.

The choice of the plate

With the curling iron everything would be easier, but with the iron you can only curl and it would soon become an unused accessory. The straightener, on the other hand, is more versatile, in addition to creating a smooth styling, used in the correct way that we have shown you in this article. and choosing between the various techniques, you can indulge yourself and change your look every day. For curls the ideal is to choose a narrow plate (from 2.5 to 5 cm wide) and heat it to the temperature suitable for your hair. If they are thin, it is better to prefer a low temperature, if instead they are thick, you can raise them a little for a more intense effect.

Here are the straighteners that we recommend to have curls of all shapes. We have selected 3 ideal for all budgets!

Alternative ways to make curly hair

Using household products and accessories you can easily create curly hair without the use of heat. Do you want to know how? Get curlers, toilet paper, and rubber bands.

  • Curlers

Curlers represent the oldest method to volumize the hair and create soft curls. Choose very wide curlers and roll up not too big locks by fixing them with a hairpin. The hair must be slightly damp and then finish drying "scaffolded" on the rollers for a lasting final result.

  • Braiding

Braids are also a super easy way to create waves on your hair. Do a first blow-dry by concentrating on the part of the roots. Leave the tips moist and create two or more braids. Get a full night's sleep and melt them the next morning.

  • Toilet paper

Toilet paper is the most bizarre method of all: you have to create lots of mini curlers by rolling the pieces of toilet paper (as if you want to create sausages!) Then roll small strands of hair around the paper and close the ends with a knot. The final effect will be very tight, particular and almost afro curls!
