Maqui berries: discover the properties and benefits of this typical fruit of South America
Often compared to goji berries or açai berries, maqui berries are named among the superfruits in many lists of foods with incredible properties. But let's see together what exactly these wondrous benefits are and whether, indeed, it is worth taking them or not.
© GraphicGirlThe first property that this berry has is certainly the very high content of antioxidants: in fact it contains a large amount of anthocyanins - part of the flavonoid family - which reaches 138mg per 100gr for fresh fruits and even 212mg / 100gr when it is speaks of the dried fruit. This element helps the body to fight the effects of free radicals which cause skin aging and can also lead to health problems.
Eating these berries (but also drinking their juice or consuming supplements based on them) seems to have positive effects also in improving cardiovascular health, precisely because of this high presence of antioxidants and also for the positive effects against diabetes. In fact, anthocyanins help to lower blood glucose levels.
If all this were not enough, it seems that maqui berries may also have anti-inflammatory effects, although this "power" is mainly attributed to the leaves of the plant.
Summarizing, therefore, the main properties of this fruit are:
- High antioxidant content
- They improve cardiovascular health
- They help regulate blood glucose levels
- Anti-inflammatory
But where to find it? How to add it to our diet? Unfortunately fresh it is very difficult to find, as it is not yet imported. The dry version, on the other hand, is found in some well-stocked herbalists or online and the same goes for supplements that use this ingredient, easily available online (even on Amazon, for example).
