10 tips for a cool home even in summer without resorting to air conditioning

Complicating the increasingly less temperate and increasingly tropical climate, summers are often characterized by days with truly unbearable heat peaks. What to do if you don't have air conditioning at home?

Discover 10 tricks to keep a cool environment and not let yourself be weakened by the temperatures hot!

1- The shutters always closed

30% of the heat comes from your windows. By taking advantage of roller shutters, curtains and similar objects in the right way, the internal temperature can be lowered to at least 20 degrees. Closing the shutters therefore prevents your home from becoming a miniature greenhouse, especially if the windows are south facing and west facing.

2- Turn your bed into a "cool oasis"

Sleeping is essential, but when it's too hot, falling asleep can be tiring. Use a thermal pillow (set to cold) while, for the feet, fill a bottle of hot water and place it in the freezer before placing it under your feet. On really hot nights, then, lightly wet the sheets before going to bed; it will help you sleep more relaxed and fresh.

3- Choose LED lights

Incandescent lamps waste at least 90% of their energy in heat. Replacing them with greener LED bulbs will make a difference on the temperature in your home, and at the same time lower your bill.

4- Limit cooking

Turning on the stove, and above all the oven, helps to heat the environment. Therefore, prefer raw and fresh foods, which do not require long cooking - salads, cold pasta, etc. - or, if you are not very hungry, prepare a light smoothie and refreshing like this:

5- Surround yourself with plants

If you have a small outdoor space, a terrace, a balcony or a garden, especially if on the most exposed and sunny side of the house, fill it with plants and vines, they will help to shield and absorb some of the heat.

Often the heat also brings with it an unpleasant humidity that makes the situation even more unbearable. Try not to increase the rate inside the house and do laundry and shower in the coolest hours, to prevent condensation and steam from worsening the situation.

7- Choose white

Light colors, as we know, reflect the sun's rays. So choose a nice white for your indoor curtains.

8- The heat is an "illusion ...

Our ancestors survived without air conditioning, you can too! Sometimes the very thought of being hot emphasizes the sensations. Focus on your body temperature, not your home temperature. Sip cold drinks and use cool fabrics, such as lightweight cotton and linen, to dress. Start cooling yourself from the inside, you will see that even the sensation of hot weather will subside.

In addition to consuming energy even when they are on stand-by, the appliances plugged into the socket heat the environment. So unplug everything you don't use: PC, TV, coffee maker and turn off the light when not needed ...

Or the blades to be installed on the ceiling. If even with all these precautions you can't resist the heat, opt for a fan; with the same use it consumes about 15 times less than an average air conditioner.
