Summer and cystitis: what to do?

Summer and cystitis form an unpleasant pairing that many women know well.
The greater frequency with which episodes of cystitis occur in the hot period is mainly due to the fact that the increase in perspiration causes a greater concentration of urine, and it is therefore easier for bacterial contamination to occur.

The experts of curarelacistite.it explain us how to behave to prevent the problem, which habits to adopt and which treatments are today to be considered the most effective and safe.
Starting precisely from the therapeutic aspect, Dr. Debora Marchiori, Specialist in Urology (Villa Erbosa - San Donato Hospital Group of Bologna), stresses that often one thinks immediately and only of the antibiotic, which while eliminating the infection, does not act on the restoration of the urothelium, the protective lining of the inner walls of the bladder where the damage occurs and the “origin” of the pain and discomfort typical of cystitis resides. This is the reason why most of the time the antibiotic seems to work at first, but then causes recurrences, and the patient accuses the same symptoms again.
In practice, eliminating the bacteria responsible for cystitis without restoring the defensive barrier of the bladder and simultaneously eliminating the inflammation is useless, because the problem will almost certainly recur soon.

A newly developed supplement

The most valid "attack strategy" to cystitis is therefore the one that acts on a double front: anti-inflammatory and reconstruction of urothelial tissues. This therapeutic goal is now attainable thanks to a new concept supplement (trade name Ialuril® Soft Gels), which contains hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, two fundamental constituents of the bladder lining (glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs), to which the marked action is associated anti-inflammatory and analgesic of curcumin and quercetin, two substances of plant origin.
The great advantage of this product is that it allows you to eliminate symptoms by restoring the physiological conditions of the bladder, without causing side effects even in the case of medium-long treatments.

The advice of the urologist

Correct diet and lifestyle are however always the basis of good prevention. Water during the day is essential to dilute the concentration of urine, but it is also necessary to follow a light diet, avoiding spicy foods and alcohol and consuming a lot of fruit and vegetables, which with their high fiber content, regulate intestinal functions. In fact, constipation is one of the first causes of cystitis, as bacteria can easily go back from the intestinal system to the genital one, reaching the bladder.

  • Hygiene
The female anatomy, with a reduced length of the urethra (the channel that connects the bladder to the outside), makes careful hygiene essential especially in the heat, with the use of delicate detergents a couple of times a day, always drying well to avoid bacterial development favored by humidity in the genital area. For the same reason, it is better not to wear a wet swimsuit for a long time and not to sit directly on the sand.
  • Sex
Sexual activity is a factor that can favor the onset of cystitis, both for the "dynamics" of intercourse which facilitates the ascent of bacteria from the perianal area, and for the stimulation of the bladder which can cause inflammation. Symptoms usually appear in the hours following intercourse, and for this reason we speak of post-coital cystitis.
In addition to taking care of the intimate hygiene of both partners, a good idea to prevent the problem is to urinate before and after intercourse: in this way the bacteria are eliminated with urination, without having time to adhere to the bladder walls and cause the infection.
