Green color: history and curiosity

Color is not just a chromatic mixture, but it is a set of sensations, ideas and thoughts that are evoked. A curiosity concerns the ancient caves, in which green does not appear because it is the color of vegetation and nature, therefore excluded. Centuries later, the Greeks left evidence of a very varied chromatic lexicon, where our color still does not appear, in favor of white, black and a wide range of reds. Not even Homer, poet par excellence in the common imagination, never mentioned green: for the ancients it was a mere pale shade that faded, faint and not very significant, among other hues. Only at the time of Pericles, in the fifth century BC, the green finds space in the language: it is defined prasinós, "leek", without paying attention to the different shades.
However, the situation is very different among the Egyptians, where color was already used 4000 years ago with positive evocative meanings: color of nature, vegetation and papyrus, it was the symbol of regeneration, associated with the supreme god Ptah, Creator who would have ordered the great primordial Chaos and the world ruled by the waters. In addition, the god Osiris was also called "The Great Green", that is the god who is reborn after death, so the stones and objects in shades of green were a good omen.

Still different is the situation of the Latins, who, unlike the Greeks, never had problems pronouncing the term viridis, hence our "green". For a long time it was considered a "barbaric" color, due to the color of the clothes that were thus dyed. However, it was a color more strictly limited to women's clothing. In Rome, however, even newborns were wrapped in greenery, as a symbol of good luck and with the same intent women looking for a husband in the Middle Ages were dressed, waiting for the happy event.

At the beginning of the history of this monotheistic religion, however, color had a negative connotation: considered an evil color, green was associated with the devil, witches and snakes. The turning point came with Pope Innocent III, who decreed that green was to be considered a medium color, to be used as an alternative to white, black and red.
