It is common knowledge to believe that International Women's Day saw its first anniversary in 1909, in memory of the workers who lost their lives the year before Cotton, a New York factory. In reality, it is rather a legend born in the years following the Second World War.
The Women's Day, in fact, was officially born on February 28, 1909 in the United States, by the will of the American Socialist Party, which organized on that date a large demonstration in favor of the right to vote for women. This topic was very hot at the beginning of the last century, discussed at length both in the USA and in the VII Congress of the Socialist International held in Stuttgart in 1907.
Demonstrations for universal suffrage soon joined other demands for women's rights. It is in this context that the massacre in the New York factory is placed: on March 25, 1911, a fire broke out in which 146 workers, mostly immigrant women, were killed. From here, probably, the legend of the factory was born Cotton, as from that moment on, women's demonstrations multiplied in several European countries.

Immediately after the end of the Second World War, Italy celebrated International Women's Day by choosing mimosa as a symbol of the celebration. The reason for this choice is to be found in the period of the year in which the anniversary is celebrated: this flower from intense yellow color blooms in the first days of March. Thus, it easily became a symbol of the celebration, remaining in the following years to commemorate the emblematic moment of the vindication of women's rights, ranging from divorce to the legalization of abortion.
