The research, conducted by a group of Spanish and Austrian scientists, reveals that the moment of ovulation would significantly weaken the female immune system, a situation that actually has a reproductive purpose, because it would allow the spermatozoa to have a better chance of fertilizing the egg. , being less threatened by the immune response.
"This could be an explanation of why females during ovulation are more at risk of being affected by sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV or HPV (human papilloma virus)," says Dr Miguel Relloso, researcher at the Laboratory of Molecular immunobiology at the Gregorio Marañón hospital and Complutense University of Madrid, Spain.
