Hyperemesis gravidarum: what it is, how long it lasts, causes and remedies
If we do not talk often enough about hyperemesis gravidarum, it is because it is a condition that is not so widespread: in fact it concerns only a small percentage of pregnant women (between 3 and 30 out of 1000).
In recent days, however, it is being discussed more than usual due to the news regarding Kate Middleton who, while expecting her third child, would be suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. Let's find out together what it is, who it affects and what are the causes, remedies and recommended therapy to prevent and heal it.
But first, listen to our tips to better experience pregnancy problems:
What is hyperemesis gravidarum and how long does it last?
80% of pregnant women, during the first three months of gestation, suffer from nausea and vomiting ... this is certainly not new! In a small percentage of cases, however (and we are talking about 0.5%), these common and widespread problems risk becoming pathological and highly disabling, to the point of requiring medical intervention to reintegrate nutrients and mineral salts: we will then speak of hyperemesis gravidarum.
A woman suffering from this problem can vomit up to ten times a day, risking dehydration and a nutritional imbalance (as well as a decisive weight loss) to be kept absolutely under control. Not surprisingly, hospitalization for hyperemesis gravidarum is frequent during the first three months of pregnancy. After the fourth month, the symptoms tend to disappear.

It is difficult to establish the real determining causes for hyperemesis gravidarum, since there are many factors that could affect, whether physical or psychological.
Among these factors it is necessary to consider first of all hormonal problems, linked above all to the increase in estrogen, as well as problems related to the gastrointestinal system.
An origin of a psychosomatic nature, due to worry or stress, certainly should not be excluded, as well as a hereditary component: if someone in your family has already suffered from it, the risk of suffering from it in turn increases.
Finally, according to some researches, hyperemesis gravidarum occurs more frequently in cases where the fetus is female.
What are the symptoms and who affects hyperemesis gravidarum?
It is mainly young women and their first pregnancy who suffer from hyperemesis gravidarum. The risk increases in cases of multiple pregnancy, heredity (as already anticipated) and if you suffer from obesity.
The most common and evident symptom is frequent and repeated vomiting throughout the day, to which are added dehydration, weight loss, increased heart rate, chronic fatigue.
Further symptoms, then, are hypersensitivity to odors, headache, incontinence and considerable psychological discomfort, from nervousness to a sense of confusion to anxiety.
Is hyperemesis gravidarum serious? What are the risks?
Rest assured: fortunately, hyperemesis gravidarum, although very difficult to bear and manage, is not serious and does not put the baby at risk. Research shows that there are no demonstrable effects on the fetus.
That said, however, premature birth may occur or the baby may be born underweight.
Hyperemesis gravidarum: therapy and remedies
If a pregnant woman suffers from hyperemesis gravidarum it is important that she force herself as much as possible to drink and replenish lost fluids and minerals. If you are unable to ingest them orally, you will need to be hospitalized.
Nutrition is equally important: the pregnant woman should prefer small but frequent meals and dry foods to avoid nausea as much as possible. Better to stay away from hot drinks as well as too strong smells. A natural help can come from ginger, excellent for anti-inflammatory the gastrointestinal system.
Acupuncture is particularly recommended, as is psychotherapy, which could help the expectant mother to better manage anxieties and nervousness and enjoy a peaceful pregnancy.
Against vomiting and nausea, under medical supervision, antihistamines or specific drugs for pregnancy can be used. Consult your gynecologist immediately, do not act independently because it could be dangerous!
