Make a hem

Find out: how to take care of your clothes

The handmade hem: it's easy!
For trousers or a skirt, first of all you have to try on the garment to take the measurements and understand how much you need to shorten it. Then, before taking it off, pin the fabric to secure the length. Finally, nothing could be simpler: with the garment inside out, sew in correspondence with the pins, taking care starting from the inside, so that the seam is not visible. Do not pull the thread and make small stitches. When you have finished your hem, iron the garment inside out.

A little trick: to get an almost imperceptible hem, use only one thread.

Be careful when taking your measurements: if the garment is linen or cotton, it risks shrinking the first time you wash it. Pants that came under your feet risk reaching your ankles! So, when you shorten your pants, always leave a little more fabric, so you can make up for it!

Another danger: Before buying the pants of your dreams, check that there is enough fabric to make the hem. If you have to lengthen them by 3 cm, for example, the existing hem must be at least 5 cm, to allow you to make a fold (you have to count a margin of 2 - 3 cm). If not, forget about this purchase!

It is necessary for garments such as jeans, which need very small points, to be invisible. Be careful not to pull the thread too tight to avoid wrinkles.
