What you may not know yet is that you don't need to be a make-up artist to get great results with contouring. So, did you want to pick up brushes and products and get busy?

What is contouring?

Contouring is a makeup technique that allows you to play with light colors and dark colors by creating shadows or by illuminating certain parts of your face to give rise to particular visual effects.
With contouring, for example, you can change the shape of your nose and make it longer, already straight or more regular in a few steps. That's right: simply with make up!
Of course, before starting you need the right products: get everything you need and then let yourself be conquered by contouring!

The basic rules of contouring

Before starting, always remember that the parts that you will darken will be less evident while you will highlight those that you will treat with the highlighter. Light colors highlight certain areas while dark colors distract attention. Use two shades lighter colors of your skin to stretch, increase volume and emphasize and two shades darker colors of your skin to shorten, wear out and hide other small flaws.

How to get a slimmer nose with contouring

To make your nose thinner after applying the foundation, draw two lines along the sides of the nose starting from the eyebrows. Start by making light lines and darken them little by little. Try to get lines parallel to the bridge of the nose: this is the right place to get a perfect contouring! Use a product that is at least two shades darker than your skin: an eyeshadow, a blush or even a bronzer will do just fine. At this point, illuminate the bridge of the nose, with a product that is at least two shades lighter than your skin: an illuminator, a foundation or a lighter concealer than the one you usually use will be excellent. Do not overdo the highlighter: proceed little by little to avoid highlighting too much and getting a bigger nose! Complete your little masterpiece by blending the lines well: the contouring must be homogeneous, without sharp contrasts. For the blending phase you will need a foundation sponge.

How to get a shorter nose with contouring

If your nose is too long and you want to get a shorter nose with makeup, start by darkening the tip of your nose. Each time you apply a dark color you make that area less noticeable. So if you put a little dark eye shadow or earth in the curve, your nose will immediately seem shorter. Choose non-pearly products: nobody likes the tip of the nose that glitters! At this point, apply the lighter highlighter along the bridge of the nose up to the middle (another trick to make your nose look shorter!). It blends very well until the presence of the products is perceived but only the effect of lights and shadows.

How to get a longer nose with contouring

If you have a slightly "potato" nose, too short and squat, you are sure to dream of a long and wiry nose. Also in this case the contouring is a valid ally to realize your beauty desires. To make your nose longer, start by applying makeup on the upper part of the nose, the one between the eyebrows. Create a dark line from the eyebrows to the tip on both sides of the nose.
Apply the highlighter to the tip starting from the part of the skin between the eyebrows. As always, it fades with care to make the result flawless but very natural.

How to get a straighter nose with contouring

Contouring not only allows you to change the shape of your nose but also to correct imperfections and small unsightly features such as bumps and irregularities. A skilful use of light and dark colors and a little dexterity allow you, for example, to immediately make your nose straighter without resorting to surgery but simply with make-up. To get a "straight nose" effect, draw two lines on the sides of the nose with a product that is darker than your skin. At this point, join the lines on the tip of the nose (as if an arrow pointing downwards). Blend the dark lines very carefully and make them natural and homogeneous. A soft and clean eyeshadow brush will be very useful for you. After blending the dark lines, it's time to highlight: draw a light and very thin line starting from the center of the eyebrows and blend it gently. A touch of highlighter also on the sides of the nose and voila: here is the regular and straight nose you have always dreamed of!

Tips for beginners

Remember that the most important step is the blending step. Never mix the different colors but rather blend the lines perfectly avoiding sharp contrasts but leaving the shades distinct. Use good quality brushes and a different foundation sponge for each color. If you are a beginner, use powder products: they are easier to use and manage than cream ones.
