Yellow discharge in pregnancy: the causes in the first trimester

Yellow losses in pregnancy in the first few weeks are frequent and caused by hormonal changes, so they will not be a cause for concern. If they occur accompanied by symptoms such as itching, burning, bad smell, which may indicate an infection in progress. In this case it is always advisable to consult your doctor or report the problem to the gynecologist to have adequate therapy.

What you can do, first of all, is to carefully observe the leaks, if they are odorless and do not cause particular problems, it is very likely that they are physiological. In any case, a check-up by the doctor is always recommended, because the sooner you get to the treatment, the better it will be for the general health of the mother and baby.

There is an important distinction to be made between yellow discharge in pregnancy and leucorrhea, physiological whitish discharge during all 9 months before delivery. Leucorrhea is absolutely not of concern, but it is important to distinguish it from other types of discharge.

There are also losses (implantation losses) of a brownish color, also physiological, which are due to the engraftment of the embryo in the uterine mucosa which causes the rupture of some capillaries.

Yellow discharge in pregnancy can also be linked to levels of progesterone, the pregnancy hormone, which, if not produced sufficiently, can cause miscarriages accompanied by losses. This is why it is often given to women who do not produce enough.

Finally, yellow losses can also occur at the beginning of pregnancy or cycle for physiological reasons. If the losses are brown then they are typical pre-cycle losses, which should not be associated with any ongoing pregnancy.

The reasons for yellow discharge in pregnancy in the second and third trimesters

In general, the second trimester of pregnancies is the one in which there are fewer losses, but some women report observing odorless, liquid or more or less dense, asymptomatic yellow losses.
In other cases, there may be thick yellow discharge similar to mucus that is due to the increase in vaginal secretions, which in some women are particularly abundant.

In the third trimester, white / yellowish discharge may increase due to vaginal leukorrhea. Finally, during the ninth month and before childbirth, the losses may instead depend on the rupture of the mucous plug that isolates the uterus from the outside, but are generally accompanied by brown or red spots.
