Maido !, Osaka's street food lands in Milan

In the heart of the design and fashion area of the Milanese city, in Via Savona 15 (Tortona area), has opened a small corner of Japan, which in a few moments, will take you through the streets of Osaka and its scents.

Maido! is an almost newborn project, created by the creative mind of the duo Costanza and Micol, who opened a year and a half ago Hambistro - one of the very first Milanese burgers before the actual boom - this time together with the cute Tomoko. A single showcase, which seems to hide but in reality is immediately noticeable, where people can sit at the table or at the various counters scattered on the sides of this rectangle of Japan and enjoy the real street food of Osaka.

And it is precisely from Osaka that Tomoko arrives, even though he has been living in Milan for many years now, and he wanted to bring a small part of his childhood and his life into the creative heart of the city, to delight the palates of those who already have these dishes. he knew and waited for them trembling (like me, for example) and of those who want to discover something that goes beyond sushi, which here, however, you will not find.

The place, small but cozy and bright, looks like one of those little bistros in New York, where you can get a drink take away or where to sit - even alone - and enjoy a quick lunch or dinner. Open kitchen, wood and red bricks that make you feel in an informal place, and a black chalkboard with the typical dishes that you can taste. Here are some of the delicacies you will find:

onigiri

Onigiri are the Japanese version of our sandwiches. Basically they are triangles of stuffed rice, with a practical sheet of nori seaweed that prevents the fingers from becoming sticky. At Maido you can find them in various versions, including the one with salmon and sesame seeds, with umeboshi plums (typical Japanese) and grilled. The first two, which you see in the photo, are really excellent. Well balanced flavors, perfect texture and ideal size.

Okonomiyaki

Typical of all Japan, but especially of Osaka, okonomiyaki (okonomi = any ingredient; yaki = grill) is a kind of omelette / pancake that has various ingredients inside. The main ones are cabbage, flour, water, yamaimo (a type of typical potato), to which different alternatives can be added as desired. Here you can choose between: pork belly, shrimp (in the picture), spinach and cheese, or a version that carries a touch of Korea with spicy kimchi and bacon, shrimp or cheese. If you have tried it in Japan or if some Japanese friend has prepared it for you, it will almost make you drop a tear.

Rice Burger

The Rice Burger Hambistro is obviously a creation in honor of the namesake hamburger shop: two "slices" of grilled rice with two options inside: Yakiniku, or marinated beef, or teriyaki chicken (in the picture). Excellent, delicate but tasty and very tasty.

Among the Otsumami (i.e. the appetizers, nda) you can also eat edamame, the classic soy beans usually seasoned with simple sea salt, miso soup, tofu salad and goma wakame, or the spicy seaweed and crunchy seeds with an almost phosphorescent appearance that you see below.

Among the main courses, however, you will also find excellent Yakisoba, or Japanese noodles sautéed on the plate, which you can enjoy with bacon, mixed vegetables, or shrimp.
If you love sweets, you could not miss Dorayaki, the typical Japanese pancakes with azuki red bean cream inside, the traditional crushed rice cakes, better known as Mochi, but also other alternatives, including an "excellent green tea cheesecake. , which you see in the picture.

The hope is that it will soon become a sort of small chain and can also open in many other cities in Italy, because finding real Japanese street food is really difficult, especially with excellent quality / price ratios like at Maido! pleasant and welcoming. In short, if you happen to be in Milan go and discover and taste their delicacies, you will certainly be satisfied! And in the meantime, follow them on the official website and on Facebook (and yes, they also have Instagram)!
