Can cats be vegetarians or vegans?

If you don't want to eat meat or other animal products, it may seem obvious that you can give your cat vegetarian or vegan cat food. In reality, this doesn't work. Because for carnivorous cats, plant food is not enough.
This means that the food is ingested without your cat getting all the necessary nutrients. While this may be fine for a few years and initially you may think the cat is healthy, it will eventually get sick and as cats cannot talk, we usually only realize this too late.

High quality cat food vs. cheap food

Unlike, for example, dogs or humans who are omnivores, cats are carnivores.
Both the teeth and their entire organism are designed for the ingestion of meat.
The definition of carnivore does not imply an exclusive consumption of meat, which mainly provides proteins, fats and some minerals and vitamins, but also of other ingredients that the meat is lacking (calcium, fiber, some trace elements, some vitamins). The choice to judge a food on the basis of the meat component alone is therefore wrong and misleading for the owners and, consequently, for their animals.
Many cheap cat foods contain grains and sugar. Unfortunately this is not always immediately recognizable, because sugar hides just like in our food behind many different names.

For example: caramel, cassia gum, locust bean gum, agar agar, chicory, beet pulp, gum arabic, sorbitol, Xili, Tupinamburex, sucrose, molasses, isoglucose, Muskovade, glucose syrup, dextrose, galactose, maltodextrin, fructose, glycogen, hexose or Kandisfarin.

Classifying these ingredients as negative is incorrect; it has been shown that cats can assimilate simple and compound sugars, that cereals have been used for a long time without causing problems for healthy subjects, as well as dairy products and the other ingredients listed. The bad reputation that cereals have with some owners stems from the fact that the products of their digestive breakdown, sugars, have a negative impact on diabetic animals, which is true. However, it is a big mistake to confuse the needs of the sick with those of the healthy; human celiacs, for example, don't have to eat certain grains, but healthy individuals don't eat them without problems.

In addition, cat food may also contain "animal by-products". The meat industry provides everything that is no longer consumed by humans: tripe, livers, hearts, kidneys, tongue, scraps of meat, chicken necks and wings, etc. all products that have passed the scrutiny of veterinary checks and which, individually, often have very interesting nutritional inputs. The cat, when it catches a mouse or a bird, discards only the nails and the feathers and flight feathers, testifying to the fact that nature has taught it to consume everything that can be useful for its health; the skin and feathers, for example, have a very low nutritional supply, but ensure proper functioning (peristalsis) of the intestine. In modern feed they, for obvious reasons, are replaced by sources of fiber (vegetables, cereals, algae, etc.) which perform the same functions.

High quality cat food - that's how you recognize it

First of all, it can seem difficult to understand what to look for when buying quality cat food. But once you realize what cats really need, it's not that hard.

It is especially important: on the packaging of high quality cat food, the ingredients are always declared and analyzed precisely, reporting the ingredients in the language of the country in which they are marketed (according to European regulations) so that the composition can be understood. For example, you can find directly which meat was used (heart, liver, ...).

We have summarized at a glance "how" it is possible to recognize high quality cat food in most cases:

  • High meat content
  • Not vegetarian or vegan
  • High protein content
  • Taurine, phosphorus, calcium, important vitamins and minerals are present

The importance of water

Cats are desert animals and their bodies are designed to absorb fluid through food, i
cats naturally don't drink a lot and therefore should be able to get enough moisture from their food. The moisture content of a mouse is about 75%, that of wet food 70% and that of dry food 10%. This is why the indications include always leaving a bowl of fresh water available to the cat.
Flowing water like in nature invites them to drink more willingly. A drinking fountain can therefore help your cat to drink more. For example, you can buy a drinking fountain here on Amazon.
