Reading coffee grounds, or caffomancy, is an ancient and fascinating divination art, which probably comes to us from Mesopotamia and which spread to Central Europe and then to Russia following the expansion of the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century. century.
In Europe, the reading of coffee grounds has known its maximum diffusion in the 19th century.
This convivial divination technique, which above all allows you to savor a good coffee, is still widespread in Eastern Europe, from the Urals to the Balkans, where it is often transmitted from mother to daughter.
First stage: preparation
The coffee grounds reading is based on the Turkish method of making coffee. So caffeomancy cannot be practiced with coffee prepared with mocha, nor with espresso or soluble coffee.
For each person you need:
- A white porcelain cup with saucer
- A teaspoon of finely ground coffee
- A cup of water
To prepare Turkish coffee (but this method is also used in Greece) you need to mix half the water and half the sugar and put them to boil in a saucepan. When the water boils, add the coffee, mix well and bring back to the boil. Then add the remaining water and sugar and boil for the third time. Pour the coffee into the cup and let it settle for a minute before slowly sipping the coffee.

After you have finished drinking the coffee, place the saucer upside down over the cup and perform small rotations of the cup, focusing on the aspects you want to know about. Turn the cup with the saucer upside down on the table and wait a few minutes until the bottom of the cup has cooled down.
Turn the cup (on which traces of coffee grounds will remain) and start reading the various figures, interpreting their meaning.
Third stage: interpretation
The symbols are read clockwise. The shapes are not always well recognizable and the important thing is to be guided by intuition. As in the tarot, the symbols must be interpreted in their entirety: they are like a puzzle that must be solved.
The figures to be interpreted are those inside the cup. These represent the future. The residues present in the saucer represent the current situation.
- The edges of the cup contain figures relating to projects, the future, travel, good and bad news.
- The traces on the external walls reveal the existence of an obstacle, but also suggest possible solutions.
- The inner wall of the cup expresses feelings, emotional balance.
- The bottom of the cup is about material goods and health.
