The hair look in the 1920s

In the twenties the androgynous look is the master: women show off short haircuts, the smooth bob becomes a must, flanked by the styled bob. With simple movements of the fingers, waves are created on the hair that have a flat appearance and are also called finger waves or pin curls. The typical 20s hair waves! If you intend to recreate a look inspired by this era, know that the best hairstyle will be a short wavy bob. If you have long hair, don't worry: just gather it in a soft ponytail and then hide the final part inside, behind the nape.
To close the hair-themed circle, in this era the perm is affirmed (it had already appeared a few years earlier), and hair dyes begin to be marketed.

The characteristics of 1920s makeup

The 1920s make-up is characterized by a pale complexion with a vague lunar scent, very thin and arched eyebrows, a look accentuated by the use of a black pencil or khol. In these years the eyeliner also began to spread at the same time as the trend of ancient Egyptian style make-up. Only the lips, small and heart-shaped, represent the only note of color throughout the face. To fill them, the first lipsticks were used inside the revolving packaging, which later became the classic tube that still contains lipstick today. This type of look was also due to the spread of silent films, in which actresses had to communicate everything through the " facial expression.

The perfect base

The use of moisturizing and anti-wrinkle creams that served as a base for make-up as well as performing a rejuvenating and elasticizing function was widespread. There were no foundations and above all there were not all the basic face shades as we have today. Often women, after applying their usual cream, went directly to the powder, which in most cases whitened the complexion giving the pale effect much appreciated.
Everything was then finished with a touch of blush, which at the time was known as rouge; in addition to being combined with the lipstick as regards the shade, it was applied with large and circular movements to give the face a round shape.

The shades of lipstick

The lipsticks in the jar give way to the first lipsticks in the tube and then in the stick, which allowed you to be able to draw the upper lip and shrink it until it becomes heart-shaped. The lower lip, on the other hand, remains of natural proportions. The mouth in this way turned out to be very sensual for those years, quite the opposite of today in which the goal is to have swollen and voluminous lips.
And what about the shades? Raspberry red and burgundy were the most used and loved lipstick colors, probably also because being dark lipsticks, they helped to make the lips even smaller.

Twenties make-up: the step by step tutorial

  • Step 1

Before starting any type of make-up it is good to take care of the skin and then start with cleansing. A mild cleanser will be enough to eliminate impurities and have a glowing skin. After rinsing and dabbing with a towel, apply your usual moisturizer.

  • Step 2

Draw the eyebrows. If you already have thin eyebrows you will be at an advantage, if you have thick eyebrows, don't pluck them! Rather cover them with a concealer and then draw the new thin and elongated shape.

  • Step 3

It's time for eye make-up. With a black pencil outline the base of the eye at the lash line, then with a black eyeshadow blend the pencil up towards the eyebrow. Stop at the eye level and take a gray dark to blend black and leave no sharp edges.

  • Step 4

Apply the false eyelashes, taking care to choose them very long and of an intense black color. Also apply a coat of mascara.
