Eco-sustainable fashion: helping the planet has never been so fashionable!
Did you know that the fashion industry is in second place in the ranking of the most polluting industrial sectors? Worse only the oil industry. The responsibility lies mainly with the fast fashion, the low-cost chain stores that, however, involve high costs both on a human and environmental level, for the treatment given to labor, often underpaid and minors, and to the planet. Suffice it to say that the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global water waste and 10% of carbon dioxide emissions. Furthermore, according to a United Nations report dated 2018, 85% of the fashion produced ends up in landfills and only 1% is recycled.
Fortunately, something is changing and people are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of what we wear. Eco-friendly alternatives can be the rental and sharing of garments (Renting fashion And Fashion sharing), which help us keep up with fashion, but without waste or holes in our wallet. To give us a good example, a series of celebrities who have been setting trends in the field of eco-sustainability for some time.
God save the queen ... and the queen save the planet!
A few weeks ago the news came that even Queen Elizabeth said no to furs, thus joining the Fur Free movement. At 93, The Queen teaches us that it's never too late to say goodbye to garments made with the (and on the) animal skin.
Always remaining within the walls of Buckingham Palace, we find Kate Middleton who, over the years, has become a champion of recycling. The Duchess of Cambridge has never been ashamed to recycle clothes and re-propose the same looks on several occasions, making them, paradoxically, more and more elegant and refined every time. A fashion icon who has followed in Kate's footsteps is Emily Ratajkowski. The model gives lessons in style, but also in ethics, wearing the same pair of boots with different outfits.
Environmentalism: the new Made in Italy trend
In Italy there are several positive examples that we can boast in the commitment to fairer fashion, among which we find:
- Cristiana Capotondi: the Roman actress dresses and supports the Quid project, an entrepreneurial reality born in 2012 whose garments are entirely produced through the recovery of quality fabric waste;
- Filippa Lagerback: the show girl not only shares her Swedish nationality with Greta Thunberg, but also her attention to safeguarding the planet. Filippa often travels by bike, has chosen to live in close contact with the nature of the Varese area and has been chosen, with good reason, as testimonial for the H&M conscious collection, a line made entirely of recycled materials. She too does not disdain fashion recycling and, to avoid further crowding the landfills, she shares her clothes with her friends and organizes solidarity markets, giving new life to even the oldest garments.
- Chiara Ferragni: the Ferragnez wedding was the event of the year 2018. A real media event followed by millions of followers in which, the most loved fashion blogger in Italy, did not miss an opportunity to share a message of "Ethical beauty": the dresses of the 6 bridesmaids were made in an eco-sustainable way by Alberta Ferretti in collaboration with Eco Age, the association for eco fashion founded by Livia Firth, wife of Colin Firth, known for the sale of dresses and accessories in organic materials and 'attention to raw materials and manpower.
