If melancholy is a state of mind, melancholy is instead a psychic pathology. Melancholy is in fact a form of depression (also called endogenous depression) characterized by strong lowering of mood, dejection, discouragement, anxiety, loss of interest in positive events. In melancholy, the symptoms of melancholy are much more pronounced and severe, to the point of constituting a real disease.
Biological or even genetic factors intervene in the predisposition to melancholy, altering the mechanisms of mood, the way of reacting to situations and the relationship with the outside world. External events (bereavement, stress, difficult situations, etc.) are not instead determinants in the onset of the disease. Melancholy is therefore a "living sickness" that comes more from within than from without. But this does not mean that it cannot be treated. The treatment, almost always pharmacological, will aim at correcting the mood alterations. , thus allowing the person to feel better about himself.

How does melancholy manifest itself?

Melancholy people close in on themselves and in their world, they isolate themselves by dwelling on what they do not have. They assume a passive and resigned attitude and undergo the events of life.
They never truly rejoice in beautiful things and are pervaded by feelings of sadness and indefinable nostalgia.

How to overcome melancholy?

Overcoming melancholy means opening your gaze inside yourself and living the real world and not just the imaginary one, it means having a greater knowledge of yourself without falling into depression, nostalgia and sadness.
Being melancholy can become a strength if you learn to invest your mental skills in the day by day. Here are some points to follow:
1. reflect carefully on your state of melancholy to understand who or what leads to being like this,
2. write down your thoughts and emotions you feel when you feel melancholy on a piece of paper or even better in a diary,
3. always write in the diary what you would like to see achieved, or the reason why you are in this state of mind,
4. bring out all your creativity through writing, dance, art or sport,
5. live your life or try to improve it starting from the little things such as keeping things in order, going out with friends or looking for new hobbies or interests.
States of melancholy lead to isolation and closure, so it is important to reflect on yourself and come out into the open.
