Video / Keira Knightley in Sudan: "A trauma difficult to understand"

The country is on the verge of no return: we are on the edge of the abyss

Keira Knightley last month visited Bor camp in Jonglei state, one of the hardest-hit areas in South Sudan, where people live in conditions that are hard to imagine. Non-existent hygiene that causes the spread of diseases and consequent victims, where starvation is a real possibility, where drinking water is like a mirage in the desert.

"To date, the crisis in South Sudan is the most serious in all of Africa, with nearly four million people - one third of the country's population - at risk of hunger. The UN has warned that if aid does not increase, 50,000 children could die of malnutrition”Says Riccardo Sansone, Oxfam Italia's humanitarian emergency manager.

Oxfam has already helped 261,000 people by bringing drinking water, sanitation, food, money, basic necessities to South Sudan, and has intervened in some of the most affected areas by providing sun lamps to reduce the risk of sexual violence during the night hours. In addition, the association is continuing to provide seeds and tools in the Waat and Lankien areas to improve food security and ensure that people have crops that can be grown.

The people I met are experiencing a dramatic situation, made up of war, hunger and disease. I have seen the extraordinary work Oxfam is doing to ensure food and safe water for the population. But the situation is getting worse and resources are running out. So many families who are desperately trying to survive every day: but they can't do it alone, they need our help

South Sudan is the youngest country in the world which, only on 9 July 2011, after 10 years of clashes with Karthoum, managed to obtain independence. But after only 2 years, in December 2013, the internal rivalries between the government and the forces of the president and vice president (of Dinka and Nuer ethnic groups respectively) have degenerated into a civil war that is tearing the country apart and that in just seven months has claimed 15 thousand victims. The situation has forced over one and a half million people to abandon their homes: 94 thousand took refuge in reception camps set up by the UN, 378 thousand managed to flee to Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan.
