Free contraception? Fewer miscarriages
According to a "survey by the University of Saint Louis, in the United States, the possibility of accessing free contraception would reduce unwanted pregnancies and, consequently, also abortions. The research was conducted by a team led by Dr. Jeffrey Peipert, who followed more than 9,000 women from 2008 to 2010, many of whom were poor or uninsured. These women could choose between different methods of contraception, all free. Result? Three quarters have chosen the most effective ones, including the subcutaneous implant which, as we know, lasts three years and usually costs a lot.
But that's not all: it seems that in Saint Louis the rate of unwanted pregnancies has dropped to 6.3 births per 1,000 adolescent girls, compared to 34 per 1,000 registered nationally in 2010. Instead, as regards abortion, the rate was 4.4-7.5 abortions per 1,000 women, compared with 13.4-17 per 1,000 for women across the St. Louis region, already below the national rate of 20 abortions per 1,000 women .
