Coincidences: what are they and how can they affect life?

Throughout history, science has been concerned with coincidences for a long time and has tried to answer the questions that have always accompanied these inexplicable facts: why do they happen? What do they mean and what impact do they have on our life? Let's try to understand what is a coincidence and what psychologists think about it.

Do you think your lot is to always attract the wrong people? The answer is in the video below.

What are coincidences

Our life is full of coincidences. But what are these events that repeat themselves and that at first glance seem disconnected from each other? A coincidence can, in our eyes, take different forms: a phone call received at a precise moment, a memory that comes to us suddenly, a dream that gives us the long-sought answer, an encounter that changes our fate, ... There are many ways in which a coincidence can occur and the more it has the power to intervene on the destiny that awaits us, the more important it becomes for us.

This happens because we see a very precise meaning that can be decisive in some moments of our existence and because they cause us a strange inner disturbance. Sometimes the coincidence seems almost a miracle to us because the probability that two events will occur between them is so low that it seems impossible to us that it is all a matter of chance.

Significant coincidences according to psychology

The term "coincidence" is a Latin word that means "falling together" and indicates an accidental event that occurs in conjunction with another event in a completely unexpected and random way. The first scholar to address the "importance of coincidence in our lives was the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung, who defined" significant "coincidences as a synchronicity.

According to Jung, synchronicities occur when two or more events are connected acausally but at the same time significant for the person involved. To be meaningful, coincidence must therefore have these characteristics:

  • it must provoke in the subject an "intense emotion
  • the facts must not be connected to each other by a cause and effect relationship
  • the coincidence must have a symbolic meaning

Coincidences often occur when we go through moments of crisis and have the function of making us glimpse the possibilities for growth. When we have to make complex decisions if we pay attention we can glimpse a hidden meaning in the apparently random events that happen to us. Dreams can also help us in this direction, and, if we know how to interpret them correctly, they provide us with a key to understanding what we must do.

The books on coincidences

Scholars have long wondered about the nature of coincidences and their role in our life. Jung and Freud have written extensively on synchronicity and in their books there are numerous references to the "science of chance". Other famous works on the subject are:

  • Deepak Chopra's book entitled "Coincidences. To spontaneously realize one's desires".
  • "The power of coincidences. Synchronicity and the mysterious role it plays in our lives", written by psychologist Frack Joseph.
  • "The coincidences that change your life. Recognize and grasp the signs of destiny". In his book (which has received excellent reviews) Marco Cesati Cassin talks about how synchronicity has an impact on our existence.
  • All of Jung's books, starting with “Man and His Symbols.” Available in bookstores or online.
  • "The secret language of signs and coincidences. How to recognize and interpret the messages of destiny", written by Gian Marco Bragadin.

Deepak Chopra's book on coincidences

In his book on coincidences, the writer Deepak Chopra asks himself the "question:" How can chance influence your destiny? " debated for a long time but before man reaches certain answers, a long time will still pass.
In his book Chopra draws on years of case study and emphasizes how people can, through synchronicities, connect with their potential before they find a way to manifest themselves clearly.

Deepak Chopra reflects on the effects produced by fate that occurred even before man had given his willingness to change: these are small signals that cannot be ignored because they are the steps to follow to build a life full of potential. As the author writes:

Every decision we make is a choice between a regret and a miracle.
I always choose miracles
