The self-tanner

Operation
A self-tanner colors the skin through a surface chemical reaction different from the natural tanning process. It works thanks to an active ingredient, dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a natural sugar derived from the peel of the chestnut, which reacts with the keratin of the skin. This reaction causes the formation of dark pigments. The intensity of the color varies according to the concentration of the product in DHA.

Practically
Before applying the self-tanner, do a scrub or peeling and moisturize the skin to eliminate dead cells and obtain a homogeneous color. The product should only be used on clean and dry skin.
Spread the self-tanner with light massages, keeping the palms of the hands well extended. Do not leave out any area (think of the neck, the feet ...). On the eyebrows, at the roots of the hair, on the elbows and on the heels, blend the self-tanner with a slightly wet cotton ball. Be careful to use little product at the elbows and knees, as the thicker stratum corneum is colored more.
Leave it on for a few hours. Wash your hands thoroughly after application. Also avoid shaving 24 hours before applying the self-tanner, to reduce the risk of irritation.

The advantages
- The self-tanner allows you to have tanned skin all year round without the risks associated with sun exposure.

Do you know everything about sun creams? Read here...

- In the beginning, self-tanners were criticized as the color obtained was too yellowish or orange. But now the formulas have changed and the age of the carrot color is over!
- Self-tanners exist in cream, gel, fluid, spray, wipes: you are spoiled for choice.
- The new products are rich in silicones, non-greasy moisturizing active ingredients that ensure good skin hydration.

Warnings
The effect lasts only a few days (on average from 4 to 6), and is gradually eliminated with cell renewal.
The greatest difficulty associated with self-tanners lies in their application. To avoid traces and other unpleasant surprises, the application technique must be respected. If in doubt, choose a colored texture: it will allow you to immediately detect errors and correct them.

To know
- There are two categories of self-tanners on the market, depending on the DHA level: concentration from 2.5 to 3% for fair skin or 5% for olive skin. It is best to try the product before applying it all over the body.
- The tanning obtained with self-tanners does not protect against ultraviolet rays. Therefore it is essential to use a sunscreen in case of exposure to the sun.
- Choose self-tanners containing moisturizing active ingredients, citrus to limit odor, alcohol-free for the face, hypoallergenic or even non-perfumed, to limit the risk of allergy.
